Tournament Mat Coordinator/Assistants
Roles and Responsibilities
- Prior to tournament: Assigned officials contact association head
officials to assure they have local officials to support the
weigh-ins.
- Assigned officials communicate and decide who can attend
weigh-ins.
- All assigned officials attend clinic (7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. night before
competition.) Distribute sign-in log to all working mat officials. Some
young officials may also be wrestling, make note of this to prevent
possible problems with your mat assignments, ie: two gyms, certain
mats/age groups (may want to check with pairing for division of mats
for these purposes.) Collect all license books.
- Prior to commencement of event: Perform a tournament site
inspection of all mats. Make necessary recommendations to the
tournament director to correct deficiencies.
- Assign teams of mat officials for all mats. Use a combination of M1
and M1E officials as mat chairpersons. Assign available M1C's as second
chairs. Head official oversee license books: validate current years
registration with sign-in log. Non-registered officials are to fill out
current year registration form. Form to be given to secretary and first
day stipend adjusted to reflect payment of dues.
- Morning of event: Have all officials meet at 7:30 am Sat. and Sun.
at mat side for mat assignments. Distribute sign-in log for those who
missed clinic. Announce second chair position (M1C) as well as first
chair position (M1E and/or M1) to confirm leadership position. Make
adjustments for officials who arrived this A.M.
- Clinician team member confirm with pairing and staging teams that
bout sheets are in staging and wrestlers will be sent to mats at no
later than 7:50 a.m. (This can be done while mat assignments are being
made.)
- Clear mats at 7:45 a.m. Mat officials assist in clearing mat
area.
- Mat chairmen confirm all team members are present and ready. Mat
chairman set up rotation to protect quality of team. Use discretion
when using M3 and M2 as mat chairs. Judge and officials should be VERY
strong in this situation. NO M3 chairmen on Sunday.
- Mentor coordinator confirms all team members are present and
ready.
- Start matches promptly at 8:00 am (NO EXCEPTIONS)
- 8:00 - 10:00 am: Assigned officials closely watch mat teams to
monitor quality of composition of teams. Make adjustments as
needed.
- Encourage teams to have next match check in and prepared to start
(proper names, proper color, taped laces, handkerchief, etc.) to
maintain the orderly progress of the tournament.
- 10:00 - 12:00 am: Check with pairing to confirm we are meeting
minimum desirable number of matches per hour per mat. (Open & JR.,
8-10; Cadet & Schoolboy, 10 -12; Kids, 12-14) Confirm with
tournament director that water is being delivered to mats at least one
time per AM session and one time per PM session.
- Watch mats closely for any potential problems or confrontations and
be prepared to assist teams with all situations in a professional
manner.
- In the event of a protest, team members should be actively
involved.
- 1:00 - 4:00 p.m.: Observe officials for upgrade recommendations.
Perform evaluations / mentoring sign-ups of those mat officials that
request an upgrade and/or mentor. Instill a sense of team philosophy.
Mentor with constructive feedback and recognition. Distribute maps to
evening social.
- Assigned team meet at 6:00 p.m. Sat. to assign mat officials for
Sunday.
- Assigned officials are paid $150.00 plus Room and Board;
Assigned Assistants are paid $75.00 plus Room and Board;
Assigned Mentors are Paid $50.00 plus Room and Board.
- Prepare list of officials to be paid and/or who will receive state
shirts. Shirts for 2 days work ONLY. Shirts are given once per calendar
year. Officials are paid $25 per full day of work; adjustments are to
be made for early departure. List should be available to secretary at
8:00 a.m. Sunday morning. Complete license books/control cards: event,
date, and signature.
- Check, license book/control card, and shirt are to be distributed
one hour prior to estimated end of last day of tournament.
- Submit mat official upgrade candidates at the end of each
tournament.
- Throughout tournament the team should create opportunities to
compliment and welcome all officials.
FINALLY: We encourage all M1E, M1, & M1C officials to attend Officials
Clinic in January to maintain continuity of rules and techniques for
mat chairmen.
State, Regional, national and FILA assignment recommendations from CA
will be enhanced by participation in state clinics and tournaments.
