Referee Positioning / Etiquette on the Mat
- The Officials crew needs to communicate open and honestly with
EACH other.
- Be positive and have FUN!
- Don't be afraid to encourage, help, or advise wrestlers.
- In terms of the spectators, ACTIONS speak louder than words.
- Do not portray negative gestures nor body language to your TEAM's
calls.
- Never talk/argue with a coach during a match.
- Don't allow yourself to be distracted by coaches. It's the Chair's
role, not yours.
- Rotate your hand on points, high above your head.
- When you throw up points, don't check to see IF the Team agrees
with your call.
- Mat positioning: use the triangle method to keep eye contact with
the Judge/Chair.
- Use the "corridor" that runs each side of the mat.
- Never stand in front nor show your back to the Judge or the
Chair.
- In par terre, you need to get closer to the wrestlers.
- Always ask for a confirmation for:
- Keep your distance in the standing position for a bigger/better
view.
- If you choose to COACH matches in between officiating, cover up
and BEHAVE.
- We need to always LOOK like a Team, then ACT like a team.
